Pharaoh’s 20 Percent Tax Increase Barely Noticed in the Midst of Booming Economy

reported by BNP via the Genesis Review

In a bold political move, the Magnanimous Central Government has enacted a new 20% tax which will expire in seven years.  The tax will be gathered in the form of produce, then set aside for the entire first seven year period.   During a second seven year period, the citizens will be required to buy it all back from the government. In this first year of the tax, when the country is experiencing unprecedented prosperity, only a few people are objecting to the tax.

This tax law is attributed to the Pharaoh’s newest cabinet member, a foreigner who was recently released from prison. The head-warden-for-political-prisoners and the-head-of-royal-food-security have both verified that this man, Joseph Isaacson, was just pulled from the Prison for Political Dissidents when no one on the royal medical or legal staffs could provide acceptable counsel for Pharaoh.

Pharaoh claimed to have had two dreams that he needed professional help with.  Apparently, horrific after-images of cows swallowing each other were keeping him from performing his normal duties.  When none of his expert staff were able to diagnose his visions, the abilities of Mr. Isaacson were brought to his attention.  Mr. Isaacson was known in the prison for giving advice concerning strange dreams.  Pharaoh has accepted Mr. Isaacson’s explanation, but full details have not yet been made public.

Objections to Mr. Isaacson were initially coming from two fronts.  Ensconced political figures resisted his rise to power, saying he should have to come up through the ranks like everyone else.  However, since Mr. Isaacson has been given his position, those in disagreement have been hard to find.

The other protest was from a few economists.  They have cautioned that this massive shift of resources to the government will weaken economy and make it more susceptible to strain from adverse natural phenomena or international conflict.  They also predict that private land ownership will cease to exist.  While acknowledging that Mr. Isaacson seems to have good intentions, they say that complete governmental control of people’s lives is the only possible outcome for such a plan.
